Convert chat messages into Google Calendar events

They used n8n to read a chat request, extract the event details, and add the meeting to Google Calendar.

Done with n8nยท Intermediate

What they did
They assembled a flow in n8n that starts from incoming chat, hands the text to an AI Agent node, and ends by writing to Google Calendar. The agent is connected to an OpenAI chat model, and its instructions tell it to interpret dates relative to the present moment and assume a one-hour event when no length is provided. A Date & Time tool turns the parsed schedule into Unix timestamps, and the agent sends back structured JSON for the calendar step to use.
How it went
The process creates calendar entries, and Google Calendar returns an htmlLink for each new event. The article did not report any test counts, success rate, or error cases.
Tips
Getting this working depends on n8nโ€™s free OpenAI credits, Google OAuth2 access, and either the free n8n cloud trial or a self-hosted setup. If you publish the chat link, other people may be able to schedule items on your calendar.

Try it yourself with n8n

Set up an n8n flow that listens for a chat message such as "[example message]" and turns it into a Google Calendar event. Pull out the event name, place, start time, and finish time, and figure out relative dates using the current date and time. If the duration is not stated, use 60 minutes. Use a date/time tool to convert the schedule into Unix timestamps, then return the details as structured JSON. Before you create, send, or submit anything irreversible, stop and ask me to confirm if any date, time, or location is unclear. Then create the event in my [calendar name] and reply with the new event link and summary.
