Connect Home Assistant voice requests to an n8n workflow
They routed Home Assistant voice queries through n8n so an agent could answer questions and run automations.
- What they did
- They installed the Webhook Conversation custom integration from HACS and pointed it at the production webhook URL for an n8n webhook node. In an active workflow, Home Assistant sent the conversation history, the user’s request, and the exposed entities with their states, areas, and aliases. An n8n agent node processed the input, returned JSON, and Home Assistant spoke the reply back.
- How it went
- This worked for entity state and attribute lookups, and they also got device control running with Home Assistant call service nodes inside n8n. Ongoing back-and-forth could continue when the answer ended with a question mark. The setup did not support direct tool calls, a webhook protected by authentication returned 403, and runs longer than 30 seconds could time out with an intent recognition error unless the timeout was increased.
- Tips
- Keep the first version to safe devices only, since the workflow can trigger actions once it is wired up. If your agent needs several steps, check the timeout setting early so the voice request does not fail partway through.
Try it yourself with n8n
Build an n8n workflow for my Home Assistant voice assistant at [Home Assistant URL]. Take the spoken request, the prior conversation, and the exposed entities with their states, areas, and aliases, then use an AI step to decide whether to answer a question or trigger a Home Assistant action. If an action is needed, call only the allowed services for [safe entity types]. Before any irreversible step such as turning on [device], changing [setting], sending a message, deleting something, or submitting a request, stop and ask me to confirm. Return a short JSON reply that Home Assistant can speak back. Start by proving it works with: “[example command].”
Fill in the [brackets]. Agents can make mistakes, so review anything before it is sent, paid or deleted.
