Translate a full book into French with chapter checks

Claude Code can work through a book file in stages, building terminology first and then translating chapter by chapter with consistency checks.

What they did
A blogger stored the manuscript as a single text file in a folder and gave Claude Code a long kickoff prompt. During the first stage, the agent read through the book, asked clarifying questions, proposed a few sample versions in different styles, and prepared reference files for terms and instructions. Once the user agreed, they entered "continue" and the agent moved through the chapters one by one, writing out each section, comparing it with the source, and revisiting earlier chapters every few sections to keep wording aligned.
How it went
The author says a book of around 300 pages can take 15 to 20 hours end to end, although only 5 to 7 hours are spent actually translating. The remaining time is mostly quota downtime, with replenishment taking about 4 hours. The article does not include a finished translation; the Pride and Prejudice passages are just demonstration material.
Tips
Expect a slow, stop-and-start process if you rely on session limits. The setup also uses a launch option that skips permission dialogs, and the Claude Pro plan is described as enough at roughly โ‚ฌ17 a month.

Try it yourself with Claude Code

I have an English book in [folder path] as [file format] files, one chapter per file. Read the material first, ask any clarifying questions, and draft a list of names, recurring terms, and style decisions for French. Show me a few possible translations of a short excerpt in [desired tone], then pause until I approve the approach. After I say yes, translate the book into French chapter by chapter into [output folder], preserve the formatting, and save each chapter as you finish it. After every chapter, revisit earlier chapters and update wording where needed so terminology and tone stay consistent across the whole book. Never replace the original files. If you reach a choice that could affect the final result, stop and ask before continuing. When you're done, report any lines you were unsure about and anything that should get a human review before publication.
