Generate Strudel music and prep it for live performance

A developer used Claude to draft Strudel code from a style description, then cleaned it up and reshaped it for live performance.

What they did
Emmet Connolly, who had not worked with Strudel before, asked Claude Code to turn a written description of a musical style into Strudel code. They went through the result line by line, keeping some parts, cutting others, and fixing sample names that Claude had invented. After that, they sent the code back to Claude and asked it to reorganize the piece so it could be performed live in sections.
How it went
They ended up with a recorded track on the second try, after about four hours in total, including writing up the process. They said the result was not something they would play for enjoyment at home and did not treat it as a major artistic achievement.
Tips
Expect to edit generated Strudel code by hand, especially sample names. It helps to use the agent’s output as a pool of ideas, then narrow it down into parts you can trigger during performance.

Try it yourself with Claude Code

I want to make a Strudel live-coding piece using [Claude Code]. Based on this style: [describe genre, mood, tempo, and artists], write a first draft that only uses sample names from Strudel’s default library, and do not invent any names. After that, reorganize the piece into live sections such as [intro], [build], [drop], and [outro]. Show me the full code, then stop and ask for my approval before you make any changes that would overwrite files or send anything out. Save the final version as [filename], and include brief notes on how I could perform it live.

Fill in the [brackets]. Agents can make mistakes, so review anything before it is sent, paid or deleted.
