Build a nightly finance tracker from bank emails

A non-coder used Claude Code to make a Raspberry Pi tracker that reads bank emails, sorts spending, and updates itself every night.

What they did
Fahad Hasin, who says they barely code, asked Claude Code to create a personal money tracker on a Raspberry Pi 5 they already had. The system gathers transaction emails from several banks and payment methods, uses a local Llama 3.2:3B model to sort purchases, and pulls in merchant email details for more context. A cron task kicks it off each night without anyone having to start it by hand.
How it went
They say it has performed better than expected, and the nightly run happens with no manual work. No accuracy numbers were shared, and the author said they cannot really assess the quality of the code itself.
Tips
Keeping the model local avoids token fees and keeps transaction data away from third parties. Small mislabels may be acceptable if the tracker is for personal use.

Try it yourself with Claude Code

Help me build a personal finance tracker on [device or computer model] that reads bank and payment emails from [email account(s)], extracts transactions, and groups spending into [your categories]. Use a local model if possible, and add any useful context from merchant emails. Before you set it up to run unattended, show me the categorization rules and wait for my approval before enabling any step that would send, submit, delete, or move data automatically. After that, schedule it to run [daily/weekly] and generate a reviewable summary.
