Use Claude Cowork on a sandboxed finance folder

A portco CFO isolated task files in a fresh folder, ran analysis there with Claude, and moved everything back after review.

What they did
A portco CFO kept each assignment in its own new folder before handing it to Claude Cowork, so the agent only touched the files needed for that job. They also fed it project packs with years of history, instructions, and a new ERP export so it could test scenarios. In a separate workflow, they used Claude Code to create a payroll-variance web tool, then checked the results for business-specific details.
How it went
They said the setup saves about the same amount of work as one full-time employee between projects. People in the discussion also described quicker modeling, no increase in headcount, and 10–15 hours saved per week. The tradeoff was that the work still needed review for hallucinations and hidden mistakes.
Tips
Keep the agent in a throwaway folder and ask for an audit trail when it produces Excel outputs. Treat the result as a draft until a human checks it, especially where judgment calls or finance context matter.

Try it yourself with Claude Cowork

I’ve put the files for [project name] in a fresh folder at [folder path]. Review everything in that folder and [task, such as build a variance analysis, reconcile the accounts, or draft the board summary] using [template or instruction file]. Save the finished file as [output format] in the same folder, and include a short note with your assumptions and any items you could not confirm. Do not delete, overwrite, or move the original files. Before you change folders, send me a clear approval request and wait for my response.

Fill in the [brackets]. Agents can make mistakes, so review anything before it is sent, paid or deleted.
