Use Claude Code to trim startup clutter and tune a PC
A user had Claude Code inspect a Windows PC, approve changes in stages, and remove background items that were tied to game stutter.
- What they did
- They started with a plain-language request about stuttering in games, then reviewed Claude Code’s suggestions one step at a time. From a normal Windows login, the agent examined logs, driver data, config files, registry entries, running tasks, and network checks with PowerShell. When changes needed higher privileges, it generated scripts that brought up UAC; the user handled BIOS edits at startup from Claude’s directions and followed screenshot-based instructions in apps that only offered a mouse-driven interface, including NVIDIA Control Panel.
- How it went
- They report that RAM was set from 4800 to 6000, the BIOS was updated, and the frame cap moved from 150 to 225, with around 217 seen in matches. They also turned off three recording tools, removed about 30 startup or background entries, and recovered roughly 85 GB. On the MacBook, the work mostly cleared disk space and did not bring much speed improvement.
- Tips
- Staged approval matters here, since the work can reach system settings that are easy to change but harder to unwind. A backup first would have been safer; the user says they did not make one and were fortunate.
Try it yourself with Claude Code
I want help reducing stutter and unnecessary load on my [Windows/Mac] computer. First, inspect the current setup and list the services, startup items, drivers, and settings you think are contributing most to the problem, with a short reason for each and how to reverse it. Do not make any changes yet. Wait for my approval before disabling, removing, editing, or submitting anything, and if a step needs administrator permission or a reboot, stop and ask me to confirm before continuing. After each approved change, tell me exactly what was done and what remains to check.
