Use Claude Code to make and manage Anki cards

They connected Claude Code to Anki with AnkiConnect so it could generate, format, and de-duplicate language flashcards.

What they did
They added the Anki Connect extension, which exposes Anki through a local API. To give Claude Code the needed instructions, they copied the add-on’s overview into a markdown file in the project. From there, they supplied a language topic and a few starting words, and Claude Code built the deck, wrote the cards, inserted them with formatting, and checked whether any matched cards already in Anki. They also had the option to ask it why it made particular choices.
How it went
They found the setup unexpectedly helpful and almost fully automated. No counts or time figures were shared, and the write-up said flashcards are only one part of language practice, not a replacement for speaking, reading, or writing.
Tips
Anki Connect is the key piece here; without it, the card data would have to be copied in manually. Putting the add-on guide in the project gave Claude Code enough context to operate Anki directly.

Try it yourself with Claude Code

Use AnkiConnect to help me build flashcards for [language]. Make a deck named [deck name] for [topic or grammar area], then create cards with [front style] on the front and [back style] on the back. Compare each new card against my existing Anki notes and skip anything that duplicates what I already have. Before you make any irreversible changes, pause and show me the first 5 proposed cards so I can approve them. After I confirm, add the rest and tell me how many were added, how many were skipped, and why you chose the card wording.
