Set up an SMS lead flow in Make

A maker tried to use Make to text new leads, qualify them, book them, and send a recap, but the reply logic kept cycling.

What they did
They built two linked Make scenarios for local businesses. One handled incoming form submissions by routing the lead through Webhooks, OpenAI, a JSON step, Twilio, and two Data Store saves so the prospect got an instant response and the thread was recorded. The second scenario was supposed to continue the text exchange, gather qualification details, arrange an appointment, and then alert the business with a summary, but they could not get that conversation flow to behave.
How it went
The part that worked was the first message sent right after the form was filled out. The follow-up SMS path kept sending more than one message, forgot prior context, and looped back to questions that had already been answered. They said they had spent several days on the debugging problem, and the feedback they received was mostly to strip the automation down and sketch the flow before adding more pieces.
Tips
Start with a simple state model so the agent knows exactly which question comes next. Run a test lead through the whole path before exposing it to real customers, especially if the workflow includes booking or handoff steps.

Try it yourself with Make

Help me build a Make automation for [type of local business] that turns new leads into booked appointments by SMS. When a lead arrives from [form or CRM], send a quick first text, ask [3 qualifying questions] one at a time, save the current stage so the bot never asks the same question twice, and if the lead qualifies, schedule them in [calendar tool]. After that, send me a brief summary. If the reply is unclear or the person asks to stop, pause and show me the next step for approval before any booking, sending, or other irreversible action. Test it with a sample lead first and show the message flow and saved state before it reaches real customers.

Fill in the [brackets]. Agents can make mistakes, so review anything before it is sent, paid or deleted.
