Use Claude to draft grading notes for problem sets

A chemistry professor tested Claude on student problem sets to produce annotations he could use as a grading reference.

What they did
Paul Robustelli, a chemistry professor, created a project called “PS3 Grading” in Dartmouth’s Claude enterprise portal. He uploaded 11 CHEM 76 problem sets and asked Claude to mark where the work went off track so he could compare those notes with his own grading. He said Claude did not affect any grades.
How it went
The project was accidentally visible to everyone in the Dartmouth Claude group, exposing student names and work. It was taken down on May 2 after The Dartmouth requested comment. The source did not report on how well the annotations worked.
Tips
Check the sharing setting before uploading student work, especially because project visibility can change from private to organization-wide. If you use an agent for grading help, keep identifying information out and review the output yourself before relying on it.

Try it yourself with Claude Code

I have a set of [student problem sets] and a [solution key or rubric]. For each file, point out where the solution diverges from the expected work and add a short grading note I can use later. Work only with the files in [folder], save the annotations to [output folder], and keep all content local and private. Before any step that would share, publish, submit, or otherwise expose files, pause and ask for my approval. Stop when every file has been processed.

Fill in the [brackets]. Agents can make mistakes, so review anything before it is sent, paid or deleted.
