Turn Claude Code into a guided study partner
A developer used Claude Code to explain a dbt migration step by step instead of just replacing the old SQL pipeline.
- What they did
- They started by giving Claude their older SQL pipeline post and a few gists, then asked it to draft a CLAUDE.md that cast the job as instruction, not automation. Claude then walked through dbt ideas, produced partial examples for them to complete, and took care of setup tasks like installs and diagnostics. They stayed in control and stepped in whenever it tried to build the solution unaided.
- How it went
- The migration doubled as a dbt lesson, and they said it was a great way to learn. Claude sometimes pushed ahead too quickly, including recommending SELECT * and inventing column values until challenged. They did allow it to write the Dagster Python.
- Tips
- If you try this, expect to redirect the agent when it starts solving instead of teaching. Verify any explanation or code it gives you, especially when working with newer or niche tools.
Try it yourself with Claude Code
I want you to act as a coach for [subject] inside this repository. Before we begin, make a CLAUDE.md that says you should teach rather than just complete tasks, use the material in this folder to guide the lessons, and check with me before taking actions that change files or affect the project. Then inspect the folder and give me an opening explanation of [first concept], plus one practice task I can do myself. Pause and wait for my approval before you make any edits, run anything destructive, or submit anything on my behalf.
