Run Microsoft Office on Linux with Wine

Use Wine and compatibility shims to get Microsoft 365 installing and opening on Linux without a virtual machine.

Done with Claude Code· Advanced

What they did
Claude Code worked in a Nix flake that launches the click-to-run Microsoft 365 installer through umu-launcher and GE-Proton rather than plain Wine. They inspected Wine and Click-to-Run logs to find each blocker, then added small shim DLLs or registry tweaks for licensing, missing Windows APIs, sign-in failures, and Direct2D drawing. The setup was packaged so it could be repeated on the same kind of system.
How it went
The full Office suite installed, and Word opened successfully. Personal-account sign-in also worked, but license status was not confirmed because the test account did not include a subscription. Excel, PowerPoint, and Outlook were present after install, but they were not tested.
Tips
Expect a large download and long periods where the installer window appears stuck. A Microsoft 365 licence is needed, and WebView2 adds another 680 MB for sign-in.

Help me set up [Microsoft Office version] on [Linux distro] with Wine, without using a virtual machine. Work in [folder], try the smallest Wine or compatibility changes needed to get the installer and apps running, and package the result as a [Nix flake / script] I can reuse. When you reach anything irreversible or costly, such as installing packages, downloading large components, deleting files, or submitting sign-in or licence steps, stop and ask for my approval first. Finish with a short README covering what you changed, how to run it, and any known issues.
