Use Claude to work through tax papers in a folder

A Reddit user pointed Claude at their tax documents, and it built returns that matched the numbers in TurboTax.

What they did
The Reddit user sqlgenius gave Claude access to a computer folder holding tax paperwork and asked it to do the taxes. Claude read the forms, asked several clarifying questions, and brought forward earlier trading-loss information. The user checked the same data in TurboTax to see whether the calculations lined up.
How it went
They say Claude finished the 2024 and 2025 federal and state returns after about 15 minutes, and TurboTax showed the same outcome. The downside is that Claude cannot transmit the returns electronically, so they still need to be mailed.
Tips
This kind of workflow appears better for straightforward situations than for more complicated filings. Review everything carefully, since the filer is responsible for mistakes and the tax rules used by the model may not be current.

Try it yourself with Claude Code

Look through the tax documents in [folder path] for [tax year]. Build my [federal] and [state] tax returns from those files, and identify where each number came from. If you hit something unclear or incomplete, pause and ask me before continuing. Do not mail, submit, delete, or change anything until I explicitly approve that step.

Fill in the [brackets]. Agents can make mistakes, so review anything before it is sent, paid or deleted.
