Tidy a crowded Downloads folder by file type

What they did
Karen Spinner shared her Downloads folder with Claude Cowork and asked it to sort the contents by type while also describing each group in a short summary. The agent scanned the 2,200 items, came back with 11 proposed folders, and waited until she signed off on that structure. After that, it carried out the sorting, suggested extra subfolders, and put outdated installers plus duplicate files into a review area. It also checked before taking any deletion step, and later it examined fuzzy filenames and suggested clearer ones.
How it went
The exchange took about 20 minutes and left 2,101 files arranged across 11 folders. It also produced 67+ renaming suggestions and identified 2GB of old installers. The rename ideas were about 70% right, and one commenter reported that rolling back the changes did not succeed.
Tips
Make a backup before you start, and keep private files and credentials out of the shared folder. This workflow requires Claude Cowork on a Mac with the desktop app running, plus a paid Claude subscription.

Open [folder path] and help me clean up my Downloads folder safely. First, inspect the files, cluster them into sensible folders by type or topic, and write a short summary for each group. Show me that proposed structure and wait for my approval before you change anything. After I approve, move files into folders, collect duplicates and outdated installers into a review folder, and ask before any deletion, submission, or permanent action. Finish with a change log listing what was moved or renamed and where each item ended up.
