Edit Office files with a command-line agent
A custom agent used OfficeCLI to read and change Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files without Microsoft Office installed.
- What they did
- They installed OfficeCLI as a single binary and added its skill to a compatible agent. The agent then used file commands such as create, add, set, get, and view to work on .docx, .xlsx, and .pptx files. It could also turn pages into HTML or PNG so the agent could check its own edits, with a browser preview that refreshed after each step.
- How it went
- The project README shows example slide decks, documents, and spreadsheets that it says were made by agents without templates or hand editing. It does not give performance numbers or describe any failures.
- Tips
- If you want visual checking, make sure a headless browser is available for PNG rendering. Also remember the binary looks for updates in the background unless you change that behavior.
Try it yourself with Claude Code
You are working with an Office file at [file path]. Open it and [specific change you want, such as update values in the spreadsheet, revise the wording in the Word document, or adjust slides 3 through 6 in the deck]. Before any irreversible action like saving over the original, deleting content, or submitting changes, pause and ask for my approval. Save the finished version as [new file name], keep the original intact, and summarize every edit you made.
Fill in the [brackets]. Agents can make mistakes, so review anything before it is sent, paid or deleted.
