Use Claude Desktop to pilot a home robot

Tal Raviv linked Claude Desktop to a small robot and let it navigate, observe, and log a patrol with voice feedback.

What they did
Tal assembled a SunFounder PiCar-X robot with a camera and an ultrasonic distance sensor, then ran the control setup on his laptop while the Raspberry Pi stayed on the robot. He connected his normal email and calendar tools and handed the session over to Claude Cowork. In a loop, the agent took images, chose motions, and stored observations as memories, while Tal talked back with corrections.
How it went
The test was shaky. When asked to stop 20 cm from the door, it kept trying for about fifteen minutes and ended up lining up with a filing cabinet instead. It did, however, get better at turning, identify his wife Laurel, and publish a test patrol journal.
Tips
Slow replies and long pauses between actions are part of the experience. Using the laptop-side harness meant token usage went through Tal’s Claude subscription rather than API keys.

Try it yourself with Claude Cowork

Connect Claude Desktop to my home robot and use its camera and distance sensor to carry out a short patrol in [area]. Work in steps: inspect the scene, choose the next movement, and keep brief memories of what you notice. Before any irreversible action such as [sending, posting, deleting, or submitting], stop and ask for my approval. After each move, tell me what you plan to do next and wait for my confirmation.

Fill in the [brackets]. Agents can make mistakes, so review anything before it is sent, paid or deleted.
