Keep Cursor confined to a disposable dev environment
They used Cursor agent mode inside a throwaway container setup with extra approval checks so it could do real work without risking the host machine.
- What they did
- They placed Cursor agent mode in a separate devcontainer for each feature and backed it with a Docker Compose stack. That stack ran the project, a database, a cache, and a Cloudflared helper, while also exposing ports needed for a Twilio voice agent’s browser UI and websocket connection. Secrets were pulled from a dedicated 1Password vault, and any dangerous operation required host-level SSH agent biometric confirmation, which let the agent run commands while staying away from the main environment.
- How it went
- With that setup, they could let Cursor keep working on actual tasks and later either collect the finished changes or scrap the container if it failed. The arrangement still needed protection beyond Cursor’s own guardrails, and Cloudflare Bot Fight Mode had to be switched off for some ChatGPT-facing workflows.
- Tips
- Treat each feature container as disposable, and keep deletion, pushes, and other irreversible actions behind a human approval step. If an external service adds its own blocking rules, check them early so the agent does not get stuck later.
Try it yourself with Cursor
Help me run Cursor agent mode safely for [project name]. Put it in an isolated dev container for [feature or branch], connect only the services it needs such as [database], [cache], and [tunnel/proxy], and load secrets from [vault or secret manager]. Before any irreversible step like deleting files, sending data, pushing changes, or submitting anything, pause and ask for my approval. Show me each config update before you make it, and if the container becomes unusable, help me discard it and recreate it.
Fill in the [brackets]. Agents can make mistakes, so review anything before it is sent, paid or deleted.
