Check restaurant availability, then verify the reservation details

An April 2026 test found that AI agents could search restaurant tables, but they still needed a person to finish the booking.

Done with ChatGPT AgentClaude· Intermediate

What they did
PCWorld tried this with two agents. Claude opened a live Resy schedule for The Smith and showed open times, while ChatGPT's agent spent about five minutes working through OpenTable in a browser. Both reached the point where a human still had to step in before the reservation could be completed.
How it went
Claude refused to finish the booking. ChatGPT's agent also made a mistake: it chose 2 diners instead of the requested 3, then left the task to the user. The article says this gap was later addressed by August 2026 in-chat booking tools.
Tips
Always verify the guest count, date, and time before letting an agent continue. Since published failure rates are not available, use the agent to gather options, not to blindly finalize them.

Try it yourself with ChatGPT Agent

Look up reservation options on OpenTable and Resy for [restaurant name or cuisine] in [city] for [number] guests on [date] at about [time]. First, list the open slots you find. Then stop and show me the restaurant, date, time, and guest count you've entered. Wait until I confirm those details before you submit, book, pay, cancel, or send anything.

Fill in the [brackets]. Agents can make mistakes, so review anything before it is sent, paid or deleted.
