Create a 5-DOF arm with FreeCAD and Claude Code
They used Claude Code to generate, print, and assemble a servo-powered arm, then added voice and camera control.
- What they did
- The builder had Claude Code work inside FreeCAD, using one Python macro that triggered live re-renders while the model was assembled from boolean shapes. They kept refining the design by talking through changes, then printed the parts and put the arm together. For the control side, a laptop program sent Whisper audio text and a webcam image to Claude Vision, which replied with JSON actions; local inverse-kinematics code translated screen positions into servo angles, and an ESP32 handled the motors.
- How it went
- The full process took about 30 hours and ended with four servos operating. The gripper was never completed, motion sensing did not close the loop, and the pixel-to-world mapping was only approximate. There were also print issues along the way: two servos were taped in place, a lid was glued down, the base turntable had to be printed again, and one print-in-place hinge failed.
- Tips
- Plan for reprints and small hardware workarounds as you go. If you use FreeCAD macros, keep the script text ASCII-only so the macro runner can handle it.
Try it yourself with Claude Code
I want to build a [N]-DOF robotic arm in FreeCAD with [AI tool]. Generate the printable parts, a servo control script, and an assembly plan for someone with no CAD background. Walk me through printing, wiring, and testing, and stop to ask for confirmation before any action that would be hard to undo, such as placing an order, deleting files, or sending code to the controller.
