Set up a daily news readout for your kitchen

They used an automated workflow to gather headlines, rewrite them, and play a spoken briefing through a home speaker each morning.

Done with ChatGPT· Intermediate

What they did
They built an n8n flow that triggered at 6:30 a.m. and asked Perplexity for factual stories from a fixed set of outlets. The output was cleaned up, then ChatGPT reshaped it into a short script designed for speech. ElevenLabs converted that script into an MP3, which was stored on their NAS and queued to play in the kitchen through Home Assistant.
How it went
The custom bulletin replaced Alexa’s flash briefing with something calmer and more tailored. They shared an example audio clip, but said the timing still needed improvement, especially the pauses, and they were considering a different voice. They put monthly spending at roughly $3 to $4 for Perplexity API use and about $10 for OpenAI, counting other calls too.
Tips
This was not a fully local setup, even though it ran through home hardware. If you build a version of your own, ask for approval before any step that would send, delete, submit, or alter device settings.
