Build a bot for a real-time strategy game
They used LLM-written code to control bots in strategy-game benchmarks and had them compete in tournaments and ladders.
- What they did
- They worked with LLM Skirmish, a benchmark suite where models produce code for strategy-game play. In the Screeps setup, the model writes JavaScript for a Screeps-like real-time strategy bot, then the bot enters tournaments and a community ladder. A separate version, StarSkirmish, has models build bots for StarCraft: Brood War.
- How it went
- The project page does not give scores or other results. It points to benchmark results and a hillclimb livestream for StarSkirmish, while the Screeps side describes the tournament and ladder setup.
- Tips
- Before copying the idea, check the Screeps and StarSkirmish pages for more on mechanics, setup, and how much human help is involved. Keep the task narrow at first: get one match running, then improve the bot after that works.
Try it yourself with Claude Code
Set up a [game name] bot using [repo or environment name]. Have the agent inspect the current game state each turn, choose actions for [specific goal], and explain any assumptions it makes. If the next step would spend money, send a message, delete files, or submit anything, stop and ask me to approve before doing it. When the match ends, give me a brief run log with what worked, what failed, and the next change you would try.
Fill in the [brackets]. Agents can make mistakes, so review anything before it is sent, paid or deleted.
